When you get a SkypeIn phone number you can choose from exchanges anywhere that they are available. For example, I currently live in the state of Florida and I got a Florida exchange in my own area code but I could have just as easily had an exchange from Miami, Orlando, or New York for that matter. I can even get a number in Europe if I want. The advantage of this relationship is that callers in that exchange area can call as a local call. This can be extremely valuable for an overseas ministry. For example, suppose you get a lot of support from people in a particular city. By getting such a number in their area they would be able to call you in your country as easily as calling their next door neighbor! Generally, you would be more likely to get a call from someone if the number is a U.S. exchange. From my experience, phone service in the developing world is very expensive. If your ISP charges you by the minute you should compare the rates to a regular phone call. Skype has a very low rate but if you pay for the Internet by the minute your total costs (Skype fee plus Internet access fee) may actually be more than what a local company may charge for the call. You should calculate this before you use Skype. But then if you are going to call the people multiple times, ask them to install Skype and then you will not have any charges from Skype at all. It won't cost anything for the Skype call which leaves you just with the regular fees you are charged by your ISP. So the bottom line for the developing world ministries is that a U.S. phone number is probably a good idea.
Technical requirements: Skype runs best on Windows XP. The official company policy is that it won't run on Windows98 but there are some reports it will. Surprisingly it will work on modems as low as 33 k.

Those that are His sheep, her and obey him, not the world. For the world does not know His ways or His voice. So next time you go through the valley (i.e. hard times), remember that God is adding stepping stones to the ones you already have and is shaping you into the person that can carry out His will for you and fell blessed. |
